With time, even a poet or an entire generation of writers will be forgotten, if no one commemorates them. The strong generation of writers who had to demonstrate loyalty to the communist regime to have an access to the world of literature should have also been forgotten. And yet, the incriminated aged seems to have provided a more apt environment for poetry than the pragmatic modern world. A good poetry does not age with time, quite the opposite, it becomes deeper. The tenth collection of the poet and the literary scientist Ján Škamla (1930-1997) truly confirms it. It is the second collection of his non-published poems of his rich literary legacy which he left behind after his death.
Readers have the chance to meet Ján Škamla again In both shorter and more extensive compositions (Rodina a samota), which seemed to be predestined for poetry recitals. Along with love poetry (cycle Liečivý závan ženy), the collection features prophetic predictions (Svojská demokracia) and unique expressions of love (Matkine ozveny). The sincerity of his confessions, which, accepting the approach death, the poet has spoken as
his farewell to life (Netrpezlivosť srdca) will make the readers feel chills, as if they were peeking into somebody else’s soul.
